| Stunning water views and peaceful rural locations are characteristic of many Co. Donegal hotels and guesthouses. In recent years, Donegal has welcomed many new lodgings and expansions or enhancements to well-established places. Here is a selection of some of my favorites. The places featured below offer all rooms with private bath/shower (en suite) unless otherwise noted. | PRICE

No other Irish hotel has such an enviable location on the beach
where the white sand meets the foam-capped Atlantic waters. Sit and listen
to the refreshing sea, surf the endless waves, or walk along the two-mile
crescent of beach this is Rossnowlagh, meaning "heavenly cove"
in the Irish language, a place well named. The Sand House has been the
focal point of this heavenly cove for over 100 years first as a
fishing lodge in 1886, later a thatched pub by 1906, and since 1949 as
hotel developed and run with utmost care by the Britton family and now by Paul Diver and staff. With a
mansard-style façade, this hotel is not a typical beach lodging, but a
classy 4-star manor house, with log fireplaces, antique furnishings, huge
bouquets of fresh flowers, and local art. Facilities include a top notch
dining room that specializes in local produce and seafood harvested in
Donegal Bay; two bars, and a glass-enclosed and plant-filled conservatory
lounge that is often sunlit and always bright with surrounding sea views;
glass elevator, and spa with Jacuzzi. The 60 guest rooms, many of which
offer large unobstructed panoramic views of the ocean, vary in size but
are all decorated with designer fabrics and period furniture including
armoires, vanities, and four-poster or canopy beds. Because of its location
between Sligo and Donegal towns, the Sand House is an ideal base for touring
the Northwest, although once you arrive, it's hard to leave this mesmerizing
setting. Closed: Dec. & Jan. €€€
