St. Martin’s Guesthouse, 2 Nuns Island, Galway City, Co. Galway, tel. 091-568286, e-mail: stmartins@gmail.com. Location is everything with this homey and picturesque lodging - it's officially called a guesthouse, but it is more of a B&B in size and facilities. Recommended by the New York Times (July 2005), it is surrounded by gardens and sits beside a waterfall, on the west side of O’Brien’s Bridge and overlooking the River Corrib – yet it is just a one block walk from the city centre. Hosts Mary and Donie Sexton offer 4 guest rooms, each with TV, hair dryer and coffee/tea tray on request. Mary’s home-made brown bread is a highlight of breakfast. € to €€ Web site: www.stmartins.ie
COLLEGE ROAD B&Bs: In addition to the guesthouses described above, there is a string of about a dozen B&B homes along College Road, just east of Eyre Square and an easy walk (5 to 10 minutes) to the heart of Galway.
Each home has car parking facilities, and rooms with TV, coffee/tea-maker and some offer wireless internet connections. Houses with even numbered street addresses overlook Lough Atalia from back-of-the-house rooms. College Road is an ideal location, so these B&Bs are very popular and get booked out quickly. Rates are in the lowest price bracket. Homes are open year-round, except for Christmas in some cases. Here are some of my favorites, listed in order of the closest to Eyre Square first.
