Killarney Hotels

Like much of the Irish countryside, Kerry has experienced a lodging boom in recent years, with many new and luxurious hotels opening up, particularly in the Killarney area. The places featured below offer all rooms with private bath/shower (en suite) unless otherwise noted. Here are some of my favorites:

Killarney Hotels

Aghadoe Heights Hotel, Aghadoe, Killarney, Co. Kerry; tel. 064-663-1766; fax 064-663-1345; e-mail: info@aghadoeheights.com. Set on a hillside overlooking the town, lakes, mountains and countryside of Killarney, this contemporary 5-star hotel is a little out of the way but well worth the 2-mile drive to enjoy the panoramic views, especially on a clear day. Although the building itself cannot match the natural surroundings, it is opulent and no expense has been spared in the décor or furnishings. Facilities include an award-winning gourmet restaurant, bar, and leisure centre with a spa, indoor swimming pool, gym, saunas, and sunbeds. The 75 guestrooms are designed to pamper and to supply every 21st century comfort. If you can afford a splurge, it is hard to beat this hotel for the incomparable views in a quiet location away from the hustle and bustle of Killarney Town. Closed: January to mid-February. €€€€ to €€€€€. Web sitewww.aghadoeheights.com

The Brehon Hotel, Muckross Rd., Killarney, Co. Kerry; tel. 064-663-0700; fax 064-663-0701; email: info@thebrehon.com.  Set just over a mile outside of the town, this stunning new (opened in 2004) 5-story hotel is named after a key aspect of Irish tradition, The Brehon Laws which governed Ireland centuries ago. Each of the 125 guest rooms is furnished in stylish modern comfort and offers views of the Killarney countryside.  Facilities include a restaurant, bar and spa featuring a sauna, steam room, treatment and relaxation rooms, and vitality pool. It is next to Ireland’s National Event Centre (INEC), and so there is ample parking in all directions.   €€ to €€€

Brook Lodge Hotel, High Street, Killarney, Co. Kerry; tel. 064-663-1800; fax 064-663-5001; e-mail: brooklodgekillarney@eircom.net. A small family-owned one-acre field is the setting of this hotel, ideally situated a few paces off High Street, Killarney's busy main thoroughfare. With views of the mountains and the cathedral in the background, it is the nearest thing to a country manor in the heart of town. Owned and operated by the Counihan family, this 3-story hotel has 24 rooms, with all modern amenities including power showers, satellite TV, hair-dryers, and coffee-tea-makers. Public areas have lots of Old World charm and furnishings; facilities include a restaurant and residents bar. Closed: November to early-April. €€ to €€€   Web sitewww.brooklodgekillarney.com

Holiday Inn Killarney, Muckross Rd., Killarney, Co. Kerry, tel. 064-663-3000; fax 064-663-3001; e-mail: reservations@holidayinnkillarney.com. Located on the busy road between the town and the national park, this hotel has a cottage-style two-story façade, not exactly the usual glass-and-concrete mold of a Holiday Inn. The interior is a blend of old and new, starting with a bright contemporary lobby area, leading into the traditional "Saddler's Pub," decorated with local vintage memorabilia. Other public areas include a restaurant and a leisure centre with indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, and fitness room. The 100 guest rooms, all contained in an adjoining 3-story wing, offer modern amenities. Closed: 24 - 25 December. to €€  Web site:  www.holidayinnkillarney.com

Killarney Avenue Hotel, Kenmare Place, Killarney, Co. Kerry, tel. 064-663-2522; fax 064-663-3707; e-mail: kavenue@odonoghue-ring-hotels.com. Built on the site of the former "East Avenue Hotel," this new property scores high on location — right at the Kenmare Road junction, just a block from Town Hall and next to a jaunting car rank. The public areas aim to preserve Killarney's traditional charms, but the 66 guest rooms offer all the contemporary comforts including air-conditioning. Facilities include a restaurant, pub, access to a fitness centre across the street, and underground parking — a real asset in congested summer months. €€ to €€€€€  Web sitewww.odonoghue-ring-hotels.com

Killarney Court Hotel, Tralee Rd., Killarney, Co. Kerry, tel. 064-663-7070; fax 064-663-7060; e-mail: stay@irishcourthotels.com. Budget travelers consider this 3-star hotel a real find, especially in the off season. Sporting an eye-catching stone-faced façade with bright yellow and red trim, this 3-story hotel is situated on the outskirts of town, a little too far to walk unless you are an avid walker, but convenient if you have a car. The interior features a traditional "old world" atmosphere with dark woods, beamed ceilings, open fireplaces, and assorted Killarney memorabilia. The 96 guest rooms have a neo-Gothic style décor with all the usual modern comforts. Leisure facilities include a turbo Jacuzzi, steam rooms, and gym. to €€€€   Web sitewww.irishcourthotels.com

Killarney Park Hotel, Kenmare Place, Killarney, Co. Kerry, tel. 064-663-5555; fax 064-663-5266; e-mail: info@killarneyparkhotel.ie. One of Killarney's few 5-star hotels, this handsome Georgian-style four-story property is a product of the 1990's although it emits a definitive old world flavor. Crowned by a mansard roof and a chic lemon-toned exterior, it sits on the eastern edge of town amid enclosed gardens. The interior offers posh and spacious public areas including a lobby and lounges with crackling fireplaces, brass fixtures, oil paintings, wainscot paneling, as well as a sunlit conservatory-style lounge overlooking the gardens. Facilities include a restaurant, library, billiard room, swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, outdoor hot tub, and fitness suite, plus ample car parking. The 72 guest rooms are outfitted with every modern luxury and comfort. Closed: 24 - 27 December. €€€€ to €€€€€  Web sitewww.killarneyparkhotel.ie

Killarney Plaza Hotel & Spa , Kenmare Place, Killarney, Co. Kerry; tel. 064-662-1100; fax 064-662-1190; e-mail: info@killarneyplaza.com. With a striking white façade enhanced by two-story ground-level arched windows, this hotel adds the look of grandeur to Killarney's Main Street. Step inside and there is an equally impressive atrium-style lobby, rich in marble and tile décor  Having opened its doors in mid-2002, the Plaza has proved popular with tour groups and conferences since it offers 198 air-conditioned guest rooms with all the contemporary comforts including internet access, personal safes, and heated bathroom mirrors. Facilities include a restaurant, bar, an on-premises Molton Brown Spa leisure area, and an underground car park. Closed: 22 December to 1 February. €€€€ to €€€€€   Web sitewww.killarneyplaza.com

Killeen House Hotel, Aghadoe, Killarney, Co. Kerry, tel.. 064-663-1711; fax 064-663-1811; e-mail: charming@indigo.ie. Set high in the hills overlooking the lakes and mountains about 2 miles northwest of town, this rambling country manor (circa. 1838) is a favorite with golfers. It's also a perfect retreat for those who seek a homey ambiance with hotel comforts and gourmet cuisine (see separate description of restaurant in "Kerry - Great Food & Drink"). Conveying a charming "old world Killarney atmposhere," the 23 guest rooms vary in size and style but present 21st century amenities. In addition to the award-winning restaurant, the public areas include a fireside lounge and a golf-themed bar with a conversation-piece wall displaying over 800 golf balls from around the world. Proprietors Michael and Geraldine Rosney are always on the scene. Closed: Closed: mid-Oct.-mid-April. €€ to €€€   Web site:  www.killeenhousehotel.com

The Malton Hotel (formerly the Great Southern Hotel), East Avenue Rd., Killarney, Co. Kerry, tel. 064-663-8000; fax 064-663-1642; e-mail: res@themalton.com. Dating back to 1854 and revered as the "grande dame" of this lakeside resort, the 4-star Malton is my favorite Killarney hotel — a mainstay of genuine "old world" atmosphere, in a truly luxurious yet comfortable setting. Set amid 36 acres of gardens and lawns on the eastern edge of town, this ivy-covered landmark welcomes you into a Georgian-style lobby of Waterford Crystal chandeliers, classic sofas and armchairs, ornate plasterwork, high ceilings, and warming open fireplaces. The main dining room is equally elegant, overlooking the well-manicured gardens, tennis courts, and a leisure centre with indoor heated pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, saunas, and gym. The 180 guest rooms, added over the years, vary in size and style, but all provide modern luxury — and have recently been enhanced and refurbished to the tune of $13 million, making them the best rooms in Killarney. It now has a range of luxury accommodation from suites, junior suites, executive and standard rooms. In addition, the hotel offers ample guest parking, and is next to the train station, bus depot, and Killarney's outlet shopping mall, yet just a 5 minute walk from the heart of town. €€ to €€€€  Web site: www.themalton.com

Muckross Park Hotel, Muckross Rd., Killarney, Co. Kerry, tel. 064-663-1938; fax 064-663-1965; e-mail: info@muckrosspark.com. For travelers seeking proximity to Muckross House and Killarney National Park, this 5-star hotel is ideal — both attractions are across the road and Killarney town is just 2 miles away. Although the present structure is quite new, this roadside inn offers a genuine "old world" atmosphere since it encompasses parts of Killarney's oldest hotel (circa. 1795) including a traditional thatched roof pub and restaurant - Molly Darcy's. The 70 guest rooms vary and in size and décor, but many have half-canopy beds, period furniture, and Victorian-style ruffled drapes and ceiling fixtures. €€ to €€€  Web site:  www.muckrosspark.com

Riverside Hotel, Muckross Rd., Killarney, Co. Kerry; tel. 064-663-9200; fax 064-663-9202; e-mail: stay@riversidehotelkillarney.com. One of the newest entries on the Killarney hotel scene, this contemporary 3-story hotel is set picturesquely beside a tributary of the River Flesk on the main road leading to Killarney National Park, and easily walkable into town. A member of the Irish Court Group, it offers 69 rooms, many of which have water views and some are air conditioned. Each room has all the modern amenities including interactive TV with movie channels and internet access. Facilities include a restaurant and ba
r; and the grounds include plenty of parking and a riverwalk beside the hotel. Closed: 24 - 26 December. to €€€€    Web site:  www.riversidehotelkillarney.com

Scotts Gardens, KillarneyScotts Hotel, off College St., Killarney, tel. 064-663-1060; email: scottskill@eircom.net. If you want  to have live music at your doorstep, this new 5-story hotel (opened in June, 2006), is hard to beat. It sits on the site of a smaller and older hotel of the same name, long known for its outdoor courtyard/beer garden that is very popular with the locals.  Facilities include 120 modern guestrooms, restaurant and bar with entertainment (nightly in the summer and weekends during the rest of the year); admission to the health club at the Gleneagle Hotel, a sister property, including a free shuttle bus. Inquire about 2- and 3-night package rates for a good deal. Closed: 23-26 December.  € to €€. Web  site: www.scottshotelkillarney.com
