Killarney's guesthouses come in every vintage, size and price range, and they all convey the individual personalities of their owners. Some offer only a handful of rooms and others are larger than hotels. The places featured below offer all rooms with private bath/shower (en suite) unless otherwise noted. Killarney Guesthouses

Located on the main road between Killarney town and Muckross House, this 4-star guesthouse was purpose built, insuring that all 10 bedrooms are well-equipped and specifically geared for guests. As its name implies, the house is set back from the road, surrounded by colorful gardens of fuchsia and other flowering bushes and plants. Glena Guesthouse, Muckross Rd., Killarney, Co. Kerry, tel. 064-32705; fax 064-35611; e-mail: glena@iol.ie. This award-winning guesthouse provides a warm welcome and many perks (free internet access, orthopedic beds, dispense bar service with ice, etc.). It is situated on the main road between Killarney town and Muckross House — a 5-minute walk from town. 26 rooms are available (including triple, quad and family rooms) and home-baking is a specialty as is a healthy options breakfast. to €€   Web site: www.hoztel.com

Over the years, this contemporary family home has evolved from a small house with a handful of bedrooms to an award-winning 4-star multi-wing guesthouse with mansard roof, panoramic windows, and a total of 17 guest rooms. Hostess Kathleen O'Regan Sheppard has developed her house while maintaining the highest quality standards and providing major hotel comforts (such as power showers and orthopedic beds). A totally non-smoking house, it sits on 3 acres of gardens and grounds, next to a dairy farm about one mile north of Killarney town. Set within a walled garden a few steps off the Muckross Road and a two minutes' walk to the town centre, this large purpose-built 4-star guesthouse is both appealing and convenient. Owner Catherine Treacy offers a choice of 16 spacious and air-conditioned guest rooms with a full range of amenities. The lounges have open fireplaces and a relaxing aura. As its name implies, this modern two-story guesthouse is a favorite with fishermen and women (tackle and drying rooms are available for guests), as well as golfers and walkers. It sits within a 5 minute walk of the town centre, amid a residential street (with private parking), surrounded by private homes and B&Bs. Hosts Ann and Donal Carroll, who are known for their varied breakfast menu, offer 10 rooms, each with TV, phone, and hairdryer. You don't have to be a golfer to enjoy this 3-star guesthouse, but it helps. It is situated 1.5 miles west of Killarney town, across the road from three18-hole championship golf courses. Nestled in a walled garden setting on the main road between Killarney town and Muckross House, this 4-star guesthouse has a distinctive Tudor-style façade. Like many Killarney guesthouses, it was purpose built, insuring that all 30 bedrooms are well-equipped and specifically geared for guests (including king-size beds, power showers, and orthopedic beds; and some ground-floor rooms). Situated mid-way between the Killarney National Park and town center, this custom-built 4-star guesthouse sits within its own walled grounds amid shady trees, with parking at the front door. Proprietors Hannah and Andrew Kissane offer 8 well-fitted rooms with all modern amenities including power showers and orthopedic beds. Slieve Bloom Manor Guesthouse, Muckross Rd., Killarney, Co. Kerry, tel. 064-34237; fax 064-35055; e-mail: slievebloomanor@eircom.net. Like many Killarney guesthouses, this 3-star guesthouse is positioned on the main road between Killarney town and Muckross House, and an easy walk to the town centre. Tucked in a residential street just off Muckross Road and within a 10-minute walk of the town, this traditional 3-star guesthouse is next to the Earl's Court Hotel. Proprietors James and Anne Wrenn offer 11 guest rooms with natural pine furnishings and modern comforts such as orthopedic beds, TV and telephone. The Wrenns are known for their delicious breakfasts, even catering to vegetarians; "early bird" breakfasts are also available for those who need an early start.
