Doolin — B&Bs

Photos: A selection of Doolin B&Bs: (top row, from left) O'Connor's Farmhouse; Sea View; Riverfield; and (bottom row, from left) Churchfield, Atlantic Sunset, Harbour View.

Even though many towns in Co. Clare (Ennis, Ballyvaughan, Tulla and Feakle, to name a few) are meccas for Irish traditional music, Doolin has managed to scoop up most of the publicity. Consequently, B&Bs have sprung up all over Doolin. The places featured below offer all rooms with private bath/shower (en suite) unless otherwise noted. Here are some of my favorites:

Harbour View, Doolin, Co. Clare; tel. 065-707-4154; fax 065-707-4935; e-mail: clarebb@eircom.net. Although not everyone favors this ranch-style B&B on the main road (R. 478) between the Cliffs of Moher and Doolin, it is a good place for guests who do not wish to climb stairs. Hostess Cathy Normoyle offers 4 ground floor non-smoking rooms, each with extra comforts such as hairdryer, coffee/tea-maker and electric blankets. The house sits on a hillside, offering views of the landscape and sea below, just over a mile from the heart of the town. Closed: Early-Nov. to mid-Feb.   Web sitewww.harbourviewdoolin.com

Dating back over a century, this handsome 2-story B&B home has been rejuventated and modernized. It sits in the heart of Doolin, next to Cullinan's restaurant, surrounded by ancient trees and walled gardens. Hostess Caitriona Garrahy offers 4 guestrooms - 3 en suite and 1 standard room including a family room. Unlike the majority of B&Bs in this area, it is open year-round. Sea View, DoolinSea View House, Fisher Street, Doolin, Co. Clare; tel. 065-707-4826; fax 065-707-4849; e-mail: info@ireland-doolin.com. No wonder it is difficult to get a reservation at this modern B&B home. In my opinion, it certainly has the best location — set on a hillside overlooking (and easily walkable to) the hub of town as well as the river and ocean. Hostess Darra Hughes offers 4 non-smoking guestrooms in luxurious style. Best of all, step outside the door and it's just a few hundred feet to the famous Gus O'Connor's Pub.
