County Limerick's guesthouses and B&Bs present visitors with great variety, from family-run homes to modern purpose-built lodgings as well as a well-known abbey. The places featured below offer all rooms with private bath/shower (en suite) unless otherwise noted. Here are some of my favorites:

Glenstal Abbey Guesthouse, Murroe, Co. Limerick; tel. 061-386103, ext. 188; e-mail: guestmaster@glenstal.org. Not everyone seeks the peace and solitude of staying on the grounds of a religious site but here is an ideal place for those who do. Home of the Benedictine monks who are known for their Gregorian chant music (they have recorded several popular CDs) and also operate a boys school here, Glenstal offers a modern guesthouse with 12 guestrooms and all the modern comforts, designed for one or two occupants. Meals are also provided each day, as is spiritual guidance, if needed. Guests can roam the extensive secluded grounds or take part of regularly scheduled liturgies. The monks run the guesthouse on a donation basis to cover costs of maintenance and meals, but they say: "we do not want you to give more than you can afford." The abbey is 12 miles southeast of Limerick City.   Web sitewww.glenstal.org

Old Quarter Lodge, Denmark St., Limerick, Co. Limerick; tel. 061-315320; fax 061-316995; e-mail: lodge@oldquarter.ie.  Looking for a good deal in the heart of Limerick City?   It's hard to beat this modern purpose-built 3-star guesthouse (previously known as Cruises House), situated a block from the junction of Patrick and O'Connell Sts., and two blocks from the tourist office and river. It's an ideal address if you want to get around on foot or public transport. Claiming to be Limerick's largest guesthouse, it offers 26 luxurious bedrooms and suites, each with phone, satellite TV, hairdryer, and coffee/tea-maker. The public areas include a guest lounge, bureau de change, and a popular pub/café (which can be a bit noisy at night). Closed: 24 Dec. – 2 Jan.   to €€    Web site:   www.oldquarter.ie
