The Rock of Cashel, seat of Ireland's kings for over 900 years and one of Ireland's greatest ecclesiastical sites, draws many a visitor to its hotels. Although they are few in number, each is different and has something special to offer. The places featured below offer all rooms with private bath/shower (en suite) unless otherwise noted. Here are some of my favorites:

Carrigeen Castle, Cahir, Co. Tipperary; tel./fax 052-41370; e-mail: carrigeencastle@yahoo.co.uk. For travelers seeking castle accommodations at a budget price, this long-established B&B is the answer. With an exterior of towers, turrets and battlements, it sits on its own walled grounds about a half-mile south of town. The castle has a long and colorful history ranging from manor house to prison. Now the Butler family offer 7 non-smoking guestrooms, 3 of which are en suite. Closed: 15 Dec.-2 Jan.   Web sitewww.tipp.ie/butlerca.htm

Cashel Palace, Main St., Cashel, Co. Tipperary, tel. 062-62707, fax 062-61521; e-mail: reception@cashel-palace.ie. Nestled amid gated grounds on Cashel's main street, this 4-star Palladian-style hotel has long been a fixture in the heart of town. Dating back to 1730, it was originally a residence for Church of Ireland archbishops and was converted into a hotel almost 40 years ago. Recent owners have updated the public areas and 23 guestrooms and furnished the entire hotel with antiques and designer-coordinated fabrics to complement the original marble mantles, Corinthian pillars, and red pine staircase. Facilities include a restaurant, bistro, and bar, as well as a unique back garden with mulberry bushes planted in 1702, and a private pathway, known as the Bishop's Walk, up a hill to the Rock of Cashel. Dundrum House, Dundrum, Cashel, Co. Tipperary; tel. 062-71116; fax 062-713366; e-mail: dundrumh@iol.ie. Surrounded by 100 acres of grounds and gardens beside the River Multeen, this impressive Georgian country manor house dates back to 1730. It was originally built as a residence by the Earl of Montalt, and later used as a convent and school before it was given new life as a hotel in 1978 by a local family named Crowe. Over the past two dozen years, it has grown and many amenities have been added to the property — from new wings of rooms and an 18-hole golf course to a contemporary leisure complex with indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gym, and fitness centre. The main house is furnished with antiques, assorted heirlooms, vintage curios, and reproductions. The 84 guest rooms are individually decorated, some with four-posters or hand-carved armoires, vanities and other traditional furnishings. Other facilities include a restaurant, pub, tennis courts, riding stables, and fishing privileges. Settle in, swim, play a round of golf, and savor this secluded spot, yet be within 5 miles of Cashel. Closed: 24 - 26 Dec. €€€ to €€€€   Web site:  www.dundrumhousehotel.com

Kilcoran Lodge, N 8 Cork-Dublin Road, Cahir, Co. Tipperary; tel. 052-41288; fax 052-41994; e-mail: kilcoran@eircom.net. It's hard to pass by this appealing old world inn, just over 10 miles south of Cashel, without stopping if only for a coffee or a snack. Set back from the main road on a hillside amid extensive gardens and 20 acres of wooded grounds, this 3-star Victorian hotel was originally a hunting lodge. The lobby and public areas still retain the charms of yesteryear — from open fireplaces and grandfather clocks, antique tables and chairs, and brass fixtures, to tall windows that frame panoramic views of the Suir Valley and Knockmealdown Mountains. The 22 guestrooms blend traditional furnishings with 21st century amenities. Facilties include a restaurant, bar, and leisure centre with indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, and solarium. €€  Web site:  www.kilcoranlodgehotel.com
