Bunratty — Guesthouses

Photos: Three Bunratty guesthouses (from left) Bunratty Grove Guesthouse; The Courtyard; and Bunratty Woods Country House Guesthouse.
Thanks to its rapid growth in recent years, Bunratty has a good selection of purpose-built guesthouses, providing an excellent variety of type and setting, likely to please most travelers. The places featured below offer all rooms with private bath/shower (en suite) unless otherwise noted. Here are some of my favorites:

Bunratty Woods Country House, Low Road, Bunratty, Co. Clare, tel. 061-369689; fax 061-369454; e-mail: bunratty@iol.ie. Sitting on a hillside, and with a distinctive gabled roof and bright yellow and green façade, this 3-star guesthouse stands out on a road full of B&Bs and guesthouses — all within one mile of Bunratty Castle. Hosts Maureen & Paddy O'Donovan have furnished it with memorabilia from the local area. There are 14 guestrooms, each with direct dial phone, TV, hair dryer, and tea/coffee-maker. The Courtyard, Main St., Bunratty, Co. Clare; tel. 061-361444; fax 061-364498; e-mail: info@bunrattycourtyard.com. Situated on the main thoroughfare of the village, next to Gallagher's restaurant, this new purpose-built guesthouse is the domain of Michael and Mary Walsh who made a name for themselves as owners of the Hunter's Lodge restaurant in Newmarket-on-Fergus. They offer 11 extra-large and well-outfitted guest rooms, 9 of which are on the ground floor. Facilities include a cheery breakfast room and a huge Alpine-style lounge with a skylit and beamed ceiling and a homey atmosphere. If the surroundings look familiar, the building, which has a hacienda-style layout with flower-filled courtyard, was formerly the thatched-roof Avoca shop. €  Web site: www.bunrattycourtyard.com
